Return to mindfulness

I left my body!
One of the primary symptoms of anxiety is a sense of having left your body. Your heart races, breathing becomes fast and shallow, palms are sweaty, you might feel like you have to go to the bathroom, rational thought seems impossible. It starts with a trigger to the nervous system leading to your prefrontal cortex going “off-line.”

What a panic attack feels like
All you want to do is run out the door and try to feel “normal” again. There are medications you can take as well as yoga, meditation and breathing exercises. All of these suggestions are helpful and can work. However, you may be left with feeling – Why me? Why can’t I just cure this, make it go away? Whatever you can do to connect back to your body will ultimately bring the solution you’re looking for.

Help for violin students
Focus on the physical aspect of playing. How can you use your bow to accentuate dynamics? Feel into your bow arm. Roll your shoulders and stretch out your arms. Maybe try singing a phrase to decide how you want to bring out the dynamics. You’re becoming more grounded. Your breathing has slowed and deepened. You’re feeling creative and artistic again. Your rational mind is working. You’re back on earth!
