Students have lives of their own

Without warning, a student who was making excellent progress says that she wants to quit. The violin isn’t for her anymore. Her teacher is dumbfounded. Things were going so well. What happened?

The child may need to try many different creative pursuits to feel fulfilled. It may be that they haven’t yet found the right fit in terms of which musical instrument to focus on. It may mean that the child needs a break for a while but perhaps will resume lessons at some point.

The teacher and parent can find it hard to accept but the child has a life and inner world of their own. Since they have only been on the planet for a short time, there is no way to know who they are or will be. There is no history on which to base patterns of behavior. We must accept our students as they are in this moment.
