Teachers need rest

Rest isn’t a luxury. It is essential for self care. It is how to access strength, energy, creativity and health. Teachers are expected to be selfless and pursue their “practice” out of love for their students. We love our students but it is a tall order to prioritize their learning over our own health and well-being.

A paradigm shift is needed. Our teachers are having their essential life energy syphoned off. We cannot continue to give at our own expense and expect a positive outcome. There is already a shortage of teachers. The lack of a healthy lifestyle is not only a turn off to potential future teachers but it also impacts career longevity.

We teachers need to stand up for ourselves and take the rest that we really need. We can’t feel guilty about taking time off or disregard how important rest is to our overall quality of life. Additionally, It is well past time for teachers to be adequately compensated. Community members also need to pick up the slack and get more involved in supporting and helping teachers.
