The yes and no of dynamics

Saying yes or no. What does this have to do with dynamics? There are the composer’s printed dynamics but there are also your own dynamics. Something has been handed to you. You need to be present and engaged. Decide whether to say yes or no but absolutely follow your own intuition.

Harmonic tension and release is aided by dynamic changes. Dynamics play into the creation of drama and provide thematic clarity. Music without dynamic contrast is monotone, monotonous and boring. I often remind my students about an actor’s stage make up. Without it, it would be hard to grasp the character’s facial expressions, reactions and emotions from the audience.

Make your own decisions about dynamics. Say yes to the intensity created by dynamics to draw in your audience. Say no to stopping short of pursuing your own dynamics beyond the “print.” Find agency within yourself to develop your own way of working with volume of sound.
