Past, present, and future
I’m becoming more and more aware of how past experiences influence my present. When there is unresolved trauma from the past, it influences perception in the present which causes fearful projections about the future. The present gets lost in the shuffle and with it a fulfilling life full of joy.
Understanding the past’s influence
It is like a bug in the code buried deep in one’s nervous system. It becomes activated when something in the present triggers it like a tripwire. Before you know it, your fight flight response is set off. You experience symptoms of anxiety, panic, dissociation, and possibly even depression.
The role of the body
The truth may actually be that trauma and anxiety reside mainly in the body rather than in the brain. Feelings and emotions may be more physical than mental. A better healing approach could be to work with the physical symptoms in the body. I have also had the sense of a force greater than myself that has carried me through the most challenging situations.
